Clean and crisp
Tasting notes
Clean, crisp and properly cold-drinkable. A light floral finish with subtle citrus behind it, and enough body that it does not feel like something has been taken out.
That last part matters. Most low calorie lager gets there by dropping the strength, and you can taste the gap. This is 4% ABV, which is where a lager of this style should sit.
The numbers
Calories per can, per pint and per half
| Serving | Calories |
|---|---|
| 330ml can | 72 |
| Half pint (284ml) | 62 |
| Pint (568ml) | 125 |
| Per 100ml | 22 |
The 72 calories a can and 22 per 100ml are the brewery’s measured figures. The pint and half pint numbers are calculated from those.
For comparison, a standard 4.5% to 5% lager usually lands somewhere well above this per pint, mostly because of the extra alcohol and the residual carbohydrate from the grain.
Longer fermentation
Zero sugar, and how it is brewed
Beer starts with grain sugars. Fermentation converts them, but most brews stop while a fair amount is still in there, which is where beer picks up both its sweetness and its carbohydrate.
SLBrew ferments for longer rather than diluting afterwards. That is the difference between a beer that tastes like a beer and one that tastes like it has been watered down to hit a number.
The result is zero sugar at a full 4% ABV.
The hardest drink to fit
Low carb and keto lager
Beer is normally the hardest drink to fit into a low carb or ketogenic day, because grain sugars survive fermentation in a way grape sugars need not.
SLBrew is built to sit in that gap. It carries 0g carbohydrate, so a can takes none of a twenty gram daily allowance, which is unusual for a beer at full strength.
If you are following a clinically supervised plan, check with whoever is supervising it.
Made in Italy
Who brews it
A family run brewery in Italy, using traditional methods. Italian brewing has a particular character to it, lighter and more aromatic than a lot of northern European lager, and that comes through here.
Serving, cases and delivery
Serve cold, 3 to 5°C. It suits a straight glass rather than anything tulip shaped, and it holds up well over a long afternoon, which is what a 4% lager is for.
Available in six and twenty four packs. Mix it with the IPA if you want both.
The whole range is in the shop, including the wine, gin and spritz.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
72 calories in a 330ml can, which is 22 kcal per 100ml. A pint works out at around 125 calories.
Yes, 4% ABV. It is not a reduced alcohol beer. The calories are lower because the sugar is gone, not because the beer is weaker.
No. Zero sugar. The fermentation runs longer than a standard brew so the grain sugars convert rather than staying in the can.
No. 0g carbohydrate. The longer fermentation converts the grain sugars rather than leaving them behind, which removes the carbohydrate along with the sugar.
A typical 4.5% to 5% lager sits well above 125 calories a pint, because of both the extra alcohol and the carbohydrate left after fermentation.
