What do we mean by Terroir?

When talking about wine, you’ll probably hear people talking about the terroir – but what is this and what does it mean when it comes to wine?

Terroir refers to all of the natural environmental features of the vineyard (and wider geographic area).  These include soil, topography, climate, etc.   All of these factors work together to give a wine its unique flavour profile.

Our wines are made at two vineyards, one in the Piedmont region of Italy, close to the dramatic mountains of the Alps, which is where our red and white wines are made. Our second vineyard is in the heart of the Prosecco region (which in 2019 became a UNESCO world heritage site) – a stone’s throw from Conegliano in the sloping hills – and is where we produce our sparkling white, pink and rosé wines.

For us, it’s the unique combination of sun, wind, water, and soil (and snow!) at our stunning vineyards that gives our wines their distinctive, delicious flavour.  So, next time you’re enjoying a glass of Sl’M wine, take a moment to think about the terroir! Cheers!
